Hegseth Announces New Drone Command, Plans for New Military Base

War Secretary Pete Hegseth announced a new Autonomous Warfare Command to oversee the U.S. military’s expansion of autonomous and robotic capabilities.

The command will have service-like authorities and be led by a yet-to-be-named four-star commander. Hegseth also announced plans for the “Next Great American Base,” the first new U.S. military base in nearly four decades, featuring modern air defenses and cutting-edge technology. Read

China has opened a joint training center and aviation academy at Ban Keun Airport in Laos, marking its third overseas military facility and second in Southeast Asia. Located about 25 miles north of Vientiane, the facility will be jointly operated by China and Laos and will be used to train Laotian pilots. Read

Russia launched its largest attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure since spring, striking 11 regions overnight. The strikes damaged the Trypilska power station and disrupted electricity and water supplies. Five people were killed. Read

Somali pirates killed five crew members aboard the oil tanker MT Honour 25 before Puntland security forces rescued the vessel off Somalia on Sept. 29, nearly five months after it was hijacked on April 21. Three Pakistani, one Myanmar and one Indian crew member were killed, while four others were injured, according to Somali authorities. Read

The U.K. government warned that more than 100 U.K.-linked academics may have unknowingly aided Chinese espionage through research funded by the China General Technology Research Institute (CGTRI), which MI5 says has strong ties to China’s Ministry of State Security. MI5 urged universities to cut ties with CGTRI, warning that continued collaboration could lead to criminal charges. Read

The Federal Trade Commission is probing Anthropic, OpenAI and other leading AI companies over potential consumer risks from autonomous AI systems. The FTC plans to demand information and compel testimony from executives following incidents involving AI agents conducting cyberattacks, including an OpenAI system’s attack on Hugging Face. Read

Ukraine has deployed the Triton unmanned amphibious ground vehicle to deliver ammunition and supplies across about 25 miles of land and water. Ukraine’s Defense Ministry said the platform can transition between land and water within seconds, helping overcome rivers, canals and marshes that complicate frontline logistics. Read
